The Story

Join the Orvis-endorsed outfitters at Miena Village Guiding for an unforgettable fly-fishing adventure in Tasmania, Australia. Tasmania hosted the World Fly Fishing Championships in 1988 and 2019 and is renowned around the world for its wild brown trout fishery. Miena Village Guiding operates from Miena Village, the home of the Great Lake Hotel. We are a destination location on the Central Highlands for those wishing to fish Tasmania's iconic lakes and streams, whether it be pulling streamers in September and October, rising early to tailing trout in the spring month of November, sight casting to lazy browns feeding on mayflies in December and January, or fishing crystal clear streams for our wily browns.

Our world-class guides have been hand-picked to provide you with the experience of a lifetime. Our introduction starts with g’day at the airport, then traveling to your accommodation at 3000 feet above sea level with a population of just over 100 within a 100 square-mile radius. Tasmanian wildlife abounds with wallabies, wombats, and Tasmanian devils eating on the lawns in front of the hotel; and, whilst fishing, we see the playful platypus, wedgetail eagles, and sea eagles in the area. Our endemic cider gum is never far away, and Miena Village Guiding participates in several environmental programs to protect this rare fauna.

You will visit on a whim, but my reckoning is that you will return regularly, as there is a lifetime of fishing on this side of the world that is quietly waiting for you.

Highlights:

  • Wild brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout.
  • Whether it’s fishing our world-renowned Western Lakes of Tasmania, home of a thousand lakes, or wading our lowland streams, we pride ourselves on offering a wonderful trip.
  • Experience Tasmania's wildlife and flora unique to this part of the world, including eagles, wombats, and our endemic cider gum, a native eucalypt in these parts.
  • Rates start from the immersion package of two days and three nights in Tasmania at AUD$2420 for the single angler or the ultimate package of three days and four nights at AUD$5,080 for two anglers.
  • Fishing season runs from September to April with high season being from November until February.

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

The Area

Miena is nestled at the southern point of the Great Lake, the largest Tasmanian waterway sitting on a highland plateau at 3,000 feet. Within proximity is the Western Lakes area on the edge of a World Heritage National Park and home to over 1,000 tarns or small glacial lakes that are shallow but filled with wild brown trout.

Nestled at the bottom of the Cradle Mountain Lake St. Clair National Park is Lake St. Clair, the deepest lake in the southern hemisphere with a depth of 720 feet. This idyllic fishing location is world class if the right conditions prevail.

Our extensive summer mayfly hatches, spinner falls, and terrestrial falls of beetles makes the land of a thousand lakes a most attractive and inviting prospect. Connected by crystal clear streams, this is a place of breathtaking beauty that few Americans experience.

Come visit, and we won’t just give you jet lag, but we will pack your days with amazing memories. Waking up on this side of the world is an experience of a lifetime.
