The Story

“Experience the Exceptional” on a fly-fishing expedition floating Montana’s Smith River, presented by Orvis-endorsed partner Healing Waters Lodge. This five-day, four-night adventure ferries you through 59 miles of the pristine, Blue-Ribbon Smith River. This winding stretch of the Smith meanders along towering limestone cliffs and National Forest lands. Our Montana-based guides are among the best and read the waters of the Smith like no other. No matter where your skills are on your journey as an angler, our guides will use their experience to provide you with the best opportunity for success. The team at Healing Waters Lodge is the largest, and one of the most experienced outfitters on the Smith River. The season for Smith River float trips typically starts in early May and ends by the middle of July. The rough and rugged landscape of the Smith River is the picture-perfect backdrop for a world-class fly-fishing expedition. Within these waters flow the conditions for day after banner day of floating and fishing. Rainbow and brown trout average 13” in length, but much larger ones, from 16” to over 20”, are not uncommon, and due to the Smith’s limited-access permit system, overcrowding is not an issue on this river. The Smith River was given its name by Lewis and Clark in 1805 during their historic expedition to the Pacific from St. Louis. Today’s Healing Waters’ Smith River float trip provides an adventure that is reminiscent of Lewis and Clark’s journey. Imagine immersing yourself in each cast while you fish, and then arriving each evening down river to find dinner already prepared in a comfortable camp setting. Further envision falling asleep each night to the sound of the river and being beneath a blanket of stars untouched by light pollution. Book your trip today and let Healing Waters Lodge take you on the ultimate Montana fly-fishing adventure.

Your Time With Us

A true fly-fishing expedition with great fishing, outstanding guides, good food, and comfortable camping accommodations. The Smith River is known for providing anglers with a great experience in a variety of conditions due to its wide range of hatches throughout the season. The Smith is a freestone river, so flows can be highly variable and are primarily controlled by Mother Nature. Each float trip consists of up to eight anglers, four guides, and three gear-boaters. Anglers should bring their own fishing equipment, although loaner rods and are available on request. Guides will provide the flies needed for the river conditions and hatches. Anglers need to bring their own waders, sleeping bags, clothing and rain gear. Plan as if you were on a five-day wilderness camping adventure. Detailed recommended gear lists will be provided well in advance of the trip.
