Upon arriving at Balmaceda airport you will be greeted by Green Baker Lodge staff and begin the southern journey along the Caraterra Austral to the lodge. Pisco sours and refreshments will be waiting on the restaurant terrace as you get your first view of the Rio Baker. After introductions are made, it’s off to fish the evening hatch—just a taste of what’s to come in the following days. Early-morning coffee and a hearty breakfast await you each day as you explore more of the Lago Carrera watershed. Lunch will be provided either in the river or at the lodge restaurant. From protein-rich meals prepared to help you refuel during long summer days to steaming bowls of soup and hot dishes during the cold and rainy fall, our kitchen provides just what anglers need when they set the rod down. After a short siesta, it’s back into the water as the sun goes down on the Cordón Contreras, the mountain range visible from the river. Happy hour and the dinner service are always served in the Angler’s Quincho, our main dining room accentuated by a large brick fireplace. And don’t forget to ask about our wood-fired hot tubs that overlook the river; they’re truly a great way to relax after a day of fishing. All guests also get to experience a classic Chilean Asado provided on the last day of the trip: a full lamb slow-roasted over an open fire for four to five hours. It’s the perfect environment in which to end the week with a glass of Chilean Carmenere red wine and share stories from the water. We can provide any and all fishing gear from rods and reels, to waders and boots, just in case you leave something at home.

At the start of the season (October/November) we will find a large number of islands in the Baker. Between these islands, the classic structures are riffle-run-pools, where the trout will be feeding. Also, the hatch of the afternoon with their huge numbers of caddis, makes the trout eat voraciously on the surface. The Baker River is an ecosystem that is completely different from the rest of Patagonia. As it is the natural drain of the largest lake in Chile, Lake General Carrera, converts this circuit of waters in the ideal environment to produce big trout. We have not found a river with so much diversity in fishing techniques, in water styles, and with an average size of trout so elevated than The Baker. In Chile and the world, the Baker River is the big league.

Are waders required for every fishing location?

In the summer months, warmer weather and heavy sun can permit wet wading in some locations. However, changes in temperature and precipitation occur often in Patagonia, therefore we strongly recommend waders for all fishing experiences.

What rods, lines, and flies should I bring on my trip?

A five-weight and a seven-weight rod will allow any angler to be successful in all waters, whether with nymphs, dries, or streamers. Anglers should bring a good floating line and a full sinking line for streamers. Streamer tip lines are not nearly as effective in the Baker due to its depth. An assortment of classic caddis and mayfly patterns, as well as large terrestrials will function well for surface activity, while woolly buggers and a few articulated flies in white, olive, yellow, and black will serve the angler well.
