Local Fly-Fishing Information
Caledonia Fish Hatchery
The Caledonia Fish Hatchery is the oldest fish hatchery in the Western Hemisphere. Rochester native Seth Green founded the hatchery in 1864 and was a pioneer in bringing the fish-farming concept to the United States. In 1870, New York State purchased the facility and continues today to raise trout used in the stocking of local rivers. Today, virtually all two-year-old brown trout used in DEC stocking are raised at Caledonia. Annual production averages 170,000 pounds.
The hatchery is available for tours most days from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. While in the area, be sure to fish Oatka Creek and Spring Brook, two of the area's premier fisheries.
