The Story

Join our Orvis Week and cast with the experts at Orvis-endorsed Montana Fly Fishing Lodge during your angling adventure in Big Sky Country. The lodge is family owned and operated by fourth-generation Montana natives on riverfront property that has been in the family since the 1940s. The lodge and many of the structures on the property have been built by the owner, with reclaimed wood from around Montana. Find yourself fly casting from a drift boat in a big, beautiful valley one day, from a fly-fishing raft in scenic mountain terrain the next day, and through the Montana prairielands the next. Spend each day in beautiful Big Sky Country on legendary, world-class waters such as the Yellowstone, Bighorn, Stillwater, and many smaller private-access Blue Ribbon walk/wade trout streams. The lodge's home waters are in a quiet corner of Montana that just doesn’t see the throngs of anglers found elsewhere in the state; it is fly fishing as it should be. Combine that with some of the most experienced fly-fishing outfitters and guides in the state and what you get is a memory-anchoring experience not to be forgotten!

Accommodations:

Montana Fly Fishing Lodge offers both classic luxury (Lodge room) and "close to nature" luxury lodging (safari-style walled tent) accommodations depending on what fits your style. In addition to lodging options at the main property, the high-country cabin is just a mile from the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park on the banks of Soda Butte Creek. The handcrafted log lodge was built with rare, large white spruce logs, several in excess of 30” in diameter. The lodge has double queen and single king suite options among four guest room accommodations. On the main level of the lodge, guests have a great room with huge trapezoidal windows and a ridge pole log at 17’, and a large cobblestone fireplace. The main floor kitchen is where private chef Judi produces cuisine that never stops wowing all guests. The lower level of the lodge has a media center, a dining area with a mix of high-top tables, a large, family-style dining table, and game tables. The lower level also grants access to the pergola-covered patio area via French doors, where guests enjoy hot tubbing, the outdoor beverage station, and a fire-table seating area. The five creekside luxury-style safari walled tents, adjacent to and an extension of the lodge, are accessed via a short walking path or golf carts. Each tent has either a king bed, or two queens, leather sofa and leather sofa, portable heating and air conditioning, mini fridge, and full bath with glass panel shower, and just outside, a babbling brook providing background music.

Meals:

Montana Fly Fishing Lodge is committed to making sure that its guests feel welcome and cared for, and that they are surprised and delighted at every turn. The dining experience has always been a prominent element of every guest’s stay. The main-floor kitchen is where private chef Judi produces Montana cuisine. Meals feature such elements as prime rib, salmon, pasta, upland game prepared with subtle spices and home-grown herbs, wild asparagus, delicious desserts, and, of course, fresh vegetables. All beverages, along with a small selection of house white and red wine and domestic beer are included in the trip price.

On arrival day, via airport transfer or private car, staff will check you into the Lodge accommodations, acquaint you with the property, and provide golf carts and fat-tire bicycles for getting around. Each guest has their assigned gearbox, which includes fly-fishing gear and equipment such as wading boots, neoprene socks, waders, PFG hooded shirts, neck gaiters, and a rough itinerary document for your stay.

Each evening, after a chef-prepared four-course dinner, there will be optional fly-casting lessons on the south lawn followed by an optional, weather-permitting, fire pit gathering, live music, or game room activities.

Daily itinerary details will be discussed each evening taking into account river conditions, insect hatches, weather, client physical preparedness, etc.

Mornings start with a hot breakfast, gear prep/fitting, guide assignment and launch! River depending, you may be fishing from a raft/drift boat or walk wading a smaller stream or private lake. Chef-prepared lunch is served riverside by your guide for the day. The guide will return you to the Lodge at day's end with fishing stories to tell around the table and campfire.

The rivers in Southern Central Montana, flowing out of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, are quite diverse. Rivers such as The Yellowstone, The Buds, and Rock Creek flow predominantly through big, beautiful valleys, flanked by the towering Rocky Mountains. The Bighorn flows through the Southern Montana prairie. Other rivers, such as the Stillwater and Boulder, flow primarily through scenic mountainous terrain. The fly-fishing experiences while staying at Montana Fly Fishing Lodge are many and varied. From walk-and-wade freestone rivers to spring creeks, private ponds, and float trips on the Stillwater, Boulder, Shoshone, Yellowstone, and Bighorn, anglers are sure to find water that appeals to them. This corner of Montana doesn't see the throngs of fly-fishing clients that other areas of Montana see. These secluded, low-pressure Blue Ribbon trout streams are home to mainly brown and rainbow trout, with the occasional Yellowstone cutthroat and brook trout. During the middle of July water flows are optimal, insect hatches are plentiful, the terrestrials are coming on strong, and the weather is generally warm and comfortable during the day.

Target Species: Brown, rainbow, brook trout, and Yellowstone cutthroat.

How strenuous are the activities?

Fishing excursions vary from floats where the anglers are not required to get out of the boat and every variation you may imagine combining walk-wading with floating. The walk-wading streams vary between streams that are not unduly strenuous with easy stream crossings and bank access to more difficult streams that take effort and require a higher-level of physical fitness.

It's all about dressing in layers, so you are comfortable throughout the day and changing temperatures. It's best to check the local weather forecast just prior to your trip for the most accurate weather conditions.
