The Story

Join Orvis at The Xflats for your new saltwater fly-fishing adventure in Mexico. The Xflats will cater to the serious saltwater fly angler while also offering relaxing and comfortable amenities for the non-angler and various sightseeing or ocean-based activities. Established in 1982, this privately-owned saltwater fly-fishing lodge combines the luxury of a resort, yet still maintains the casualness of beachfront living. The XFlats sets itself high above the standard set at most fishing lodges and prides itself on the complete guest experience. They are professional and polished while remaining rested and relaxed. The entire property stretches over 150 ft of remote beachfront where permit and bonefish are daily visitors. Their 200-foot pier lies in the center of the property where guests will be picked up by their guides for the day. Spend your mornings, afternoons, or days off on the pier waiting for the inevitable visit of many local species of fish. Whether you are searching for the best saltwater fly-fishing experience or looking to just get away from it all, you will be sure to find your paradise in the Caribbean waters of the Mesoamerican Reef, in “the flats” where permit, bonefish, and tarpon thrive.

Meals:

The Xflats at Tierra Maya is known village-wide for its exquisite cuisine and rustic beachfront settings. Whether you are savoring local cuisine or a more casual toe-in-the-sand vibe, you’ll enjoy their authentic local specialties and favorites, prepared and served in a restaurant that showcases the art of fishing with the companionship of fellow anglers. Located oceanside, the restaurant features fresh seafood and local cuisine. Guests savior authentic local seafood while enjoying the companionship of fellow anglers. Breakfast and dinner will cater to the local cuisine as each will complement the daily menu. With or without the accompaniment of sweet oceanside sounds, every meal is a delight, crafted with local produce and spices for your palate.

Alcohol:

The Fish Bar does not fall short of historical glory and immortalized pursuits. Adorned on the walls of the bar, guests will find copious entries and objects that share a narrative of the past, from laminated maps to tarpon scales. Each item is designed to be held and examined, as we encourage your interaction. Our environment is proposed for engagement; to share our stories of the seas and talk of tales yet to be. Grab a pint and share your adventures.

Your day of fishing starts with a hearty breakfast followed by you being picked up from the private Caribbean dock. The owner or manager of The Xflats will introduce you to your personal guide for the day. A typical fishing day has guests departing from the lodge at 8:00 AM and returning around 4:00 PM. On low-wind days guests often fish the Caribbean flats with no run at all. However, on windier days or depending on the species you are targeting, a common ride of 10-20 minutes to Chetumal bay is necessary. At the end of each day, reunite with your fellow travel companions, relax with a drink, and enjoy the layout and scenery of the beautiful property. As the sun sets, you’ll dine under the stars on freshly caught or locally grown specialties prepared by the chef. Following dinner, guests can return to their room for further relaxation or hang out in the common areas and share fish stories with fellow anglers.

*Please note that this itinerary is subject to change.

The Xflats is the destination of choice whether you are new to flats fishing or chasing the coveted saltwater grand slam. The fishery of Chetumal Bay is a picturesque shallow-water flats fishery. The oceanside flats, where the lodge is located, are extremely rich with fish and wonderful to fish when the wind is low. The boat ride to the fishing grounds takes less than 30 minutes and offers a vast range of fishing opportunities as well as protection from the wind. The two main targets are permit and bonefish. If you have ever wanted to chase permit, there might not be a better place to do so. The Chetumal Bay fishery has been proven as one of the most reliable and consistent permit fisheries and its uniqueness in many ways makes it one of the best places to chase permit in the world. Water depths range from less than 1 ft to over 5 ft and many opportunities allow for guests to get out of the boat and chase fish on foot. Opportunities for barracuda and jacks are also provided on a daily basis. The fishery also supports opportunities for baby tarpon and snook with most of our chances at these species being in the small local lagoons.

Targeted species:permit, bonefish, tarpon, snook, barracuda, Jack
