The Orvis Fly Fishing School in Utah is hosted by Jans Mountain Outfitters at Silver Baron Lodge in Park City. Great fly fishing is available on the blue ribbon waters of the nearby Provo and Weber Rivers, and the Thousand Peaks Ranch in the beautiful Wasatch Mountains. Park City offers a variety of others activities and the Silver Baron Lodge is near historic Main Street with great shopping and dining. The school covers everything from fly casting, choosing the right tackle, leaders and knots, to fly selection, and how to safely release fish.

1-Day Program Itinerary

8:30 a.m. Student registration at Jans Mountain Outfitters.
9:00 a.m. Caravan to Silver Baron Lodge.
9:30 a.m. Introduction and discussion of class program.
9:45 a.m. Classroom presentation – The Orvis Progressive Method to Fly Casting video.
10:00 a.m. Report to casting pond for demonstration on the basic casting stroke; students casting.
11:00 a.m. Classroom presentation – Tackle and flies.
12:00 Lunch (catered to school.)
1:00 p.m. Report to casting pond for demonstration on shooting line, false casting, and roll casting; students casting.
2:00 p.m. Classroom presentation – Knot tying seminar. Discussion on leaders, hands-on knot tying.
2:30 p.m. Pond fishing trip – Demonstration on hook-setting and fish fighting techniques. Demonstration on fishing flies. Students fishing and practice casting.
3:45 p.m. Return to classroom for closing statements, and graduation certificates.
4:00 p.m. End of School.

To Fly Casting part two: video on shooting line, false casting, false casting and shooting line, and roll casting.
1:15 p.m. Report to casting area for demonstration on shooting line, false casting, false casting and shooting line, and roll casting; students casting. Video tape students casting.
2:45 p.m. Classroom presentation—Knot tying seminar: Discussion on leaders, and handson knot tying.
4:00 p.m. Presentation on equipment and accessories.
4:30 p.m. End of first day.

Day Two
9:00 a.m. Classroom presentation – Basic entomology, fly selection, tips on how to handle, photograph and release fish. Demonstration on hook-setting and fish fighting techniques.
10:00 a.m. Video analysis. The Orvis Progressive Method to Fly Casting part three: video on the double haul.
10:45 a.m. Report to casting pond for demonstration on the double haul. Demonstration on fishing flies in still water; students casting and fishing.
12:00 Lunch (catered to School.)
1:00 p.m. Travel to Provo River
1:20 p.m. Orvis-endorsed fishing trips and tips on fishing with guides. Tips on wading safety.
1:35 p.m. Provo River trip – Discussion on reading water. Demonstration on fishing flies in moving water; Students fishing.
3:45 p.m. Return to schoolroom for closing statements and graduation certificates.
4:30 p.m. End of school.
