The Story

Let the experts at Flying B Ranch—an Orvis-endorsed wingshooting lodge—create a memorable bird hunting adventure in Idaho. Avid wingshooters new to the Flying B Ranch come because of the reputation for unparalleled wingshooting, but they come back for the people as much as for the place. With an 88% return rate, the 'B' has carved out a unique place in the wingshooting industry with an atmosphere that can be described as "home." Many Orvis reviews submitted by Flying B Ranch guests have described the culture of the staff as "family" and their annual return to the lodge as "coming home." What may be most engaging about this lodge is the unanimous focus of personalized service, to the extent that you feel like every part of your stay has been tailored to your interests and every need anticipated—down to the details you would never even think to ask.

They continue to thrive off of guest feedback, such as their commitment to inclusive pricing, meaning a worry-free visit with no hidden costs. The guides get to the core of what drives you as a discerning wingshooter and use their experience to create unforgettable days afield for you, your family, and your friends.

Nowhere else in the world can you pursue so many upland species in such a dynamic landscape. What would otherwise be pursued at three different destinations, can be done all in one trip to the Flying B. The quality and quantity of birds encountered on this property far exceed the expectations of even the most experienced wingshooters.

This bonded team of experienced outdoors professionals has been referred to by guests as a well-oiled machine that closely mimics the dynamics of a complete family. All share a unifying passion for connecting their guests with the spectacular outdoors that surrounds them, yet each does so in their own way, with a diverse and genuine array of personalities.

Flying B Ranch has been leading the industry as an exceptional wingshooting destination since 1985, when the Korean War veteran owner and his family opened it to the public. Their decades of success are punctuated by their devotion to improvement and the management team's commitment to reading every guest survey.

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

At the Lodge:

The lodge atmosphere can best be described as upscale but not uptight. The lodge feels like a big home, always warm and welcoming, filled with laughter, good conversation, and a singing chef. You can return from the field to the great room fireplace, have a drink at the blue pine live-edge bar and catch your favorite game, or soak in hot tub looking across the meadow at the grand bluffs towering over Lawyer Creek. Every square foot feels like the wild of Idaho with the comfort of home.

Within the 14,000 sq ft log lodge there are 14 private guest suites with 20 beds. There are four dog-friendly rooms available in the main lodge and additional outdoor kennel space for personal hunting companions. Enjoy two dining areas, great room, lounge, massage room, hot tub, infrared sauna, patio and fire pit, pro shop and gun room, as well as a private trout pond. Just 1/4 mile from the main lodge sits a private Ranch House with five bedrooms (seven beds), three bathrooms, two living areas, full kitchen, and large covered decks overlooking the canyon. This is ideal for families, friends, and colleagues looking for added privacy.

Food & Drink:

The lodge's two full-time private chefs specialize in western gourmet, featuring classics like ribeye steaks, prime rib, and salmon. In addition, we serve specialty courses such as bison, antelope, elk, wild boar, and halibut. Chef Ryan's pheasant enchiladas for lunch have remained a guest favorite over the past decade and it is just one of the many recipes that they have in print to share with guests. Chef Todd features upland game birds in many of the evening appetizers he hand delivers to the lounge, such as bourbon buffalo pheasant and bacon wrapped, maple-glazed chukar. But be sure to save room for the huckleberry creme brûlée! Both chefs enjoy sharing their craft with guests in hopes that their recipes will inspire guests to enjoy their harvest at home with friends and family. As part of an inclusive experience, all wine, top shelf spirits, import and domestic beers are included in your stay. Both the breakfast nook and formal dining room were renovated with the interior of the lodge in 2018 and feature custom crafted Amish wood tables which make for a customizable dining space. Large groups can combine tables to easily share in stories of the day afield.

The Flying B Ranch operations include fly-fishing, salmon and steelhead fishing, and a multitude of free range big game opportunities which keeps them open 365 days a year. Although they are in operation year-round, the wingshooting season is limited to August 15th through April 15th.

Species:

The majority of the season, wingshooters will be focusing primarily on pheasant, chukar, and Hungarian partridge. California quail and roughed grouse can also be found on the property in addition to blue grouse that may be targeted in the forest during a shorter season.

Region/Terrain:

As the only Orvis-Endorsed Wingshooting Lodge in Idaho, the ranch is a short 80-minute drive from the nearest commercial airport and only 45 minutes from the nearest 5,000 ft private runway. The Flying B Ranch consists of 5,000 private acres of virtually every natural upland landscape available in North America. Through the center of the property runs Lawyer Creek, a year-round stream shouldered by lush vegetation including cottonwoods and thick cover brush. History lovers should add the 'Off the Top' morning hunt to their bucket list, as you start at the top of the canyon and walk down the same ridgeline that Lewis and Clark traveled in their expedition. Several sights on the ranch are noted in the Lewis and Clark journals as well as several locations of historical and archaeological significance to the Nez Perce Tribe.

Typical Weather:

Weather is very mild because we are in a river valley at only 1300 ft in elevation. The fall season begins very warm tapers and off to good mild temps with cool mornings and warm afternoons. During winter, wingshooting we will sometimes get snowfall in the canyon but it is often very little and melts off by the afternoon. Spring wingshooting offers great weather for wingshooting all the way through March.
