The Story

Hosted by Florida Keys Outfitters in Islamorada the Orvis Everglades Fly Fishing School is held on the historic grounds of Islander Resort and the beautiful backcountry of the Everglades. The first day of your three-day adventure will be spent with Truel Myers, Orvis Head Fly Fishing Instructor, learning fly casting techniques, tackle and fly selection, knots, hook-setting and fish fighting techniques. Truel has taught thousands how to cast a fly rod and his specialty is teaching the double haul. Days two and three will be spent on a flats skiff (two anglers per skiff) fishing with an experienced Florida Keys Outfitters guide in the Everglades targeting tarpon, redfish, or snook (or a combination of the three) depending on fishing conditions.

Tuition to the Saltwater School includes:

  • Comprehensive instruction
  • Use of premium Orvis Tackle
  • Lunches
  • Two full days of guided fishing

Note: Because of the heavier tackle used in the Orvis Everglades Fly Fishing School we strongly recommend that participants be at least 12 years old.

Program: Our teaching methods allow us to handle all levels of experience and abilities. Indoor and outdoor sessions are evenly divided, with the main emphasis placed on developing and perfecting fly-casting skills. Our goal is to have the students exit the program with the ability to handle 50-foot plus casts effectively, understand casting and fishing techniques when fishing on a flats skiff, have a good understanding of fly selection, leaders, knot tying skills, and the application/use of related gear and equipment for the saltwater flats. We also encourage an appreciation for fine tackle and emphasize the importance of the catch and release ethic, a clean healthy outdoor environment, and continued pursuit of quality fly fishing experiences through the promotion of our Orvis-Endorsed Lodge Outfitter and Guide Services.

Capacities & Student/Instructor Ratio: The typical school capacity is 8 students, with a student/instructor ratio of 4:1.
