The Story

Enlist the help of Orvis-endorsed wingshooting guide Chad Hoover on your hunting trip to Montana. Hoover Outfitting operates in the far northeastern reaches of the state; this area is the last frontier, and it is all prairie. The birds are wild and the habitat is both rich and expansive.

The prairie cover in northeast Montana is host to snow berries, buffalo berries, assorted terrestrials, and wheat. All of these food sources in turn provide our birds with ample nourishment.

Hoover Outfitting concentrates on sharp-tailed grouse first and foremost, but guests also pursue Hungarian partridge. Our guides are enthusiastic and driven outdoorsmen who maintain an intimate knowledge of the local terrain and wildlife.

Our dogs are well-trained and of the finest pedigree. Year-round exposure to wild birds and wild places makes our dogs at home in the field. We hunt both pointing dogs and flushers. Experience Hoover Outfitting: a rare opportunity to hunt wild birds on one of the last untouched expanses of prairie wilderness in existence today.

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

Hoover Outfitting hunts upland birds in September and October. Sharptails are in family coveys in September, then mature into larger, more watchful groups in late October.

Hungarian partridge are regularly found near abandoned structures in September and October. They often feed in harvested fields.

Species:

Native Sharp-tailed grouse are the most prolific species in the area. They are followed by Hungarian partridge and ring-necked pheasant. There is a small population of sage grouse but they are not common.

Northeast Montana upland areas consist of mixed-grass prairie, rolling grassland, and stubble fields. The hiking terrain is a moderate grade with occasional hills. Irrigated lowlands and river corridors contain alfalfa fields and brushy creek bottoms.
